Revello pitches BlueSox to first victory of season

Andrew Revello escaped a jam and turned in a gem.

The Butler right-hander’s debut helped the BlueSox break into the win column.

Revello held down Chillicothe with seven strong innings and the BlueSox pulled away for a 6-1 victory over the Paints on Wednesday night to salvage a split in the Prospect League’s season-opening series at Pullman Park.

Revello retired the last 10 batters he faced, allowed four hits and struck out eight.

“It was everything I thought he was going to do,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. “Andrew pitched very, very well and that’s something I expect out of him every time.”

Not every inning was easy, though.

After the BlueSox offense spotted Revello a 2-0 edge, the St. Bonaventure sophomore plunked Vinnie Booker with the first pitch of the top of the third, Jossue Delgado followed with a single to left and Troy Kuhn reached on a dropped fly ball in right to load the bases with no outs.

The nightmare situation worked out like a dream.

Revello induced a grounder back to the mound from Zac Mathie for a 1-2-3 double play and fanned clean-up hitter Dan Zuchowski to end the threat.

“He ran into trouble, but pitched very, very efficiently,” said Rebyanski. “He battled that inning and didn’t give up any runs.”

The outing impressed Chillicothe manager Greg Cypret.

“Their guy was really sharp,” said Cypret. “He was mixing his slider, change and had a good fastball.

“We had the one inning and he did a great job getting out of it.”

While Revello took care of business on the mound, Taylor Schmidt sparked the Butler offense. The Pittsburgh native was 3-for-4 with two extra-base hits and played a direct role in four of Butler’s six runs.

Schmidt led off the bottom of the second with what appeared to be a routine single, but took advantage of an unsuspecting defense by hustling around first and slid safely into second for a double.

Two batters later, Schmidt bolted for third base on a double steal. The throw sailed into left field, allowing the University of Cincinnati freshman to score with ease. Jordan Schwartz followed with an RBI double to score Justin Brozick and give Butler a 2-0 lead.

Schmidt’s attack on the basepaths was a sampling of a style the BlueSox plan to implement all season.

“We have a lot of speed. ... We’re going to use that,” said Rebyanski. “That’s just my style. I’m always willing to take those risks just to advance a base and make a guy try to make a throw from the outfield.

“Sometimes, we’re going to get burnt,” he admitted, “but at the same time it’s going to help us win a lot of ballgames, so we’re going to keep playing our style of ball.”

Schmidt doubled home Tyler Detmer and Butler High grad Cody Herald in the fifth to boost the BlueSox advantage to 4-1 and also provided an RBI single in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Herald went 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base. Detmer, who arrived in Butler earlier in the day, reached base four times and scored twice.

Detmer, Herald and Schmidt — Nos. 3-4-5 in the lineup — were a combined 6-for-10 and scored four runs.

Chillicothe starter Jack Peck went four innings, gave up two runs — one earned — and struck out five.

“He did a good job,” said Cypret of Peck. “He competed like crazy, but just wasn’t quite as sharp and got the pitch count way too high.”

David Frederick allowed four runs — two earned — in three innings of work for the Paints, before Tito Nava pitched the eighth.

Tyler Ferguson and Anthony Battaglia each pitched a scoreless frame to secure the Butler win.

“They did a great job of stretching out the lead late,” said Cypret of the BlueSox. “We just couldn’t put a whole lot together.”
