Showtime series to film in Zelienople

ZELIENOPLE — As is the case in its neighboring Harmony, a Showtime series starring Jeff Daniels is set to film a scene in Zelienople next week.

At its borough council meeting Monday, Zelienople approved a request to film a scene for “American Rust” outside a house on South High Street on July 19, although the names of those present and what type of scene it will be were not immediately available.

The filming, according to assistant location manager Nate Patterson, will include one scene outside the South High Street house, with production taking a brief pause and resuming filming inside the house later. Zelienople had only to approve the request to film outside, as it will likely impact traffic and because the house is private property.

This is the second time in roughly three years Zelienople has hosted filming for a series, with the Netflix series “Mindhunter” having been partly filmed in the borough in 2018. Patterson referenced that show during his request Monday, saying the impact of “American Rust” will be minimal comparatively.

“I know you've done the 'Mindhunter' thing before,” he said. “This is not on the same level” in terms of impact.

Also approved was a request to limit parking on High Street during filming. Cones will be placed on the road Friday, which will inform drivers they may not park in the area of filming from noon on July 19 through midnight July 20.

Additionally, the borough agreed to turn off the power to one streetlight near the house at about 7 p.m. July 19, so long as the studio pays for the overtime wages of the borough's electric utility staff.

July 19 is a day full of area filming for the series, which according to Showtime is set in a “Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices” and is due to premiere Sept. 12.

Patterson said the crew will begin their day in Ambridge, Beaver County, before proceeding to Harmony and, finally, to Zelienople around 5 p.m. before wrapping up that night.
