LATROBE — Jim Petruska, 28, a 2000 graduate of Mars High, was named interim coach of the St. Vincent College women's basketball team.
Kristen Zawacki, the team's only coach in its 27-year history died Dec. 25.
Petruska graduated from St. Vincent in 2004 and has been on the staff since 2006.
Mars senior running back Austin Miele was selected to the first team of the Pennsylvania Football News/Coaches Class AAA All-State squad.Teammates and fellow seniors Dylan Bear and Seth Geyer were third-team selections. Bear was named at offensive line, Geyer as a linebacker.Planets offensive lineman Cameron Cress was an honorable mention.In Class AA, Moniteau junior Kyle Armagost was a second-team punter. Freeport seniors Derek Durand was a fourth-team wide receiver and Cody McClelland was a fourth-team defensive lineman.In Class A, Union's Kaden McGregor was a fourth-team punter.
PITTSBURGH — Troy Polamalu is the first Steelers safety in 30 years to be chosen by his teammates as their most valuable player.Polamalu is the first safety to win since Donnie Shell in 1980. He is the first defensive back to be named since Rod Woodson in 1993.Despite missing the last two games with an Achilles' injury, Polamalu is tied for the AFC lead with six interceptions. He also was chosen as the NFL defensive player of the week in successive weeks.
PITTSBURGH — The NFL has reduced the fine levied on Steelers linebacker James Harrison for his Oct. 17 hit on Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi from $75,000 to $50,000.The league's appeals officer, Ted Cottrell, reduced the fine because he said Harrison understands the player safety rules and has made an effort to adjust his technique to play within those rules. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell supported the reduction.
STANFORD, Calif. — Top-ranked Connecticut’s record 90-game winning streak is over.The Huskies never led and were beaten by No. 9 Stanford 71-59 Thursday night, ending a run that drew national attention to women’s basketball.Stanford was the last school to beat the Huskies, in the 2008 NCAA semifinals.Last week, the Huskies (12-1) topped the 88-game winning streak set by John Wooden’s UCLA men’s team from 1971-74 by beating No. 22 Florida State 93-62, then won their 90th in a row this week at Pacific.
