Society exhibits ‘Civil War’The Butler County Historical Society presents the last public showing of “The Civil War in Pennsylvania,” a 500-square-foot exhibit featuring four life-size historic figures, modular panels describing Pennsylvania’s contributions, and original items from the collections of the historical society.Western Pennsylvania provided infantrymen and the industrial resources for the North. More than 340,000 citizens from Pennsylvania, a number second only to New York state, served in the Union Army.Display dates are Nov. 1 to 20, with hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and Dec. 2 to 19, with hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.Admission is free. Aviary site of art showPITTSBURGH — The Wings & Wildlife Art Show and Marketplace returns this weekend to the National Aviary.After a 10-year hiatus, the juried show and marketplace on Saturday and Sunday showcases original work in paint, photography, textiles, jewelry, metal, ceramics, paper and wood.Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the show is included in the price of regular admission, which is $14 for adults, $13 for senior citizens, and $12 for children ages 2 to 12.More information about the aviary at 700 Arch St. is available at www.aviary.org.
Vets discuss experiencesPITTSBURGH — Veterans can attend an event at the Carnegie Science Center from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Nov. 14.The center is co-hosting the event with the Veterans Breakfast Club.The morning begins with coffee and a screening of “D-Day: Normandy 1944” in the Rangos Omnimax Theater.A breakfast follows the movie. Todd DePastino, executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, will moderate as veterans of World War II and other conflicts discuss how the movie relates to their experiences.The cost of $15 includes the movie, breakfast, and admission to the science center for the rest of the day. Jimmy Stewart jacket displayedPITTSBURGH — Beginning this Saturday, visitors to the Senator John Heinz History Center can see the World War II flight jacket of legendary Hollywood actor, decorated U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, and Indiana, Pa., native Jimmy Stewart as part of the museum’s “We Can Do It! WWII” exhibition.After joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941, Stewart flew on 20 bombing runs into Germany as a B-24 combat leader and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the French Croix de Guerre for his service during the war.As an actor, Stewart won an Academy Award for his leading role in “The Philadelphia Story” and starred in the Frank Capra classic 1946 film, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”In addition to the jacket and other items, visitors to the “We Can Do It!” exhibit can learn about the development of the Jeep.More information is available by visiting www.heinzhistorycenter.org or calling 412-454-6000.
