Rebecca Sue Bitter

Rebecca Sue Bitter, 66, of Butler died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the comfort of her home after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 3, 1950, in Butler, she was a daughter and second child of the late Mary Jane Daller Bitter and Frederick James Bitter Sr.

Rebecca graduated from Butler High School in 1969 and from a computer technology school in Pittsburgh shortly thereafter.

She worked at Butler Memorial Hospital and then in the corporate offices of Friedman's Freshmarkets from November 1976 through September 2015, when she retired. She returned to Friedman's to work part-time through December 2016.

A lasting legacy of Rebecca was when it was your birthday at Friedman's, you were responsible for supplying the cake, pie or lunch.

She enjoyed reading and gardening and was the primary caregiver for her mother, Mary Jane, for many years and loved everything Disney. Over the years, she made over 100 trips to Walt Disney World in Orlando and had collected an amazing array of Disney memorabilia.

She was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Butler.

Surviving are her daughter, Jenny Sue Whitmire; five grandchildren; her two brothers, Frederick J. “Rick” (Carole) Bitter Jr. and Gregory John (Michele) Bitter of Butler; a sister, Amy Bitter Lumley (Dutch) of Paragould, Ark.; a niece, Melissa (Ken) Heller; nephews, Trevor Frederick Bitter and Frederick Harold “Erick” Bitter; a grandniece; a grandnephew; four aunts and their families; an uncle and his family; and numerous cousins.

BITTER — A memorial Mass/celebration of life for Rebecca Sue Bitter, who died Sunday, June 18, 2017, will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler, with the Rev. Jack Nanz officiating.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rebecca's honor to the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.Arrangements assisted by the Geibel Funeral Home, Butler.
