Bednar added to NL All-Star roster

Pittsburgh Pirates closing pitcher and Mars graduate David Bednar was named to the National League All-Star team’s roster Tuesday. Bednar replaces Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was recently placed on the injured list with a sore shoulder.

As of Tuesday, Bednar had pitched 31.1 innings, striking out 37 challengers and walking just four. He has a 2-0 record, a 1.44 ERA, and 16 saves. He’s three saves away from bettering his total from last season, in which he was also an All-Star.

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco and Houston Astros oufielder Kyle Tucker were also named as replacements for the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout — both of whom are also injured.
