Team owners pause to give thanks
Now that we've given thanks to the menial things like family and health, it's time to get down to the real business of being grateful. Some of our readers sent us notes on what they're appreciative of this fantasy football season.
John Murray, of West Deptford, N.J., starts off with a popular refrain.
"I am thankful that I had the first pick in the draft and was able to draft LaDainian Tomlinson, who single-handedly has kept me in first place through the first 10 weeks of the season."
Jim Matricardi, of Perkiomenville, Pa., has similar blessings, but his have lasted longer.
"I'm in a five-player keeper league. I had the second pick in our draft the year LaDainian was a rookie (2001). The guy with the first pick took Michael Bennett."
Michael Bennett? Ouch.
Mike Smith, of Brandon, Fla., is one of the few fantasy owners whose team hasn't been bitten by the injury bug.
"I'm thankful that none of my starters have missed games with injuries," Smith said. "Thank you, Tom Brady, Edgerrin James, Tiki Barber, Chad Johnson, Plaxico Burress, Donald Driver (sorry, Javon Walker owners) and Chris Cooley."
West Philly's Jacqui Brown says "I got L.T., Tom Brady, and Steve Smith in an auto draft (God loves me!). I also grabbed Greg Jones last week for great yardage (106 vs. Baltimore, in Week 10). I must confess, in my lowest moment, with Brady on a bye, I picked up and played Gus Frerotte."
Then there's Anthony Lanatto, who actually is grateful that he is not in a league this year.
"Being the homer that I am," Lanatto confessed, "I would no doubt load up on every Eagle that I could. That would mean McNabb, Westbrook, Owens, Smith, Akers, and the Defense. Whomever I could get! For various reasons, they wouldn't have worked out."
Steve McNair needs 10 yards to pass John Elway (3,407) and move into fourth place for most rushing yards by a quarterback. In order, name the top three.
Ravens running back Chester Taylor:Taylor's stock rises as Jamal Lewis continues to slip. Though he's listed as questionable this week with sore ankles, he could be a good pickup for those who are playoff-bound. Baltimore's last three games are home against Green Bay and Minnesota and at Cleveland.Panthers running back Stephen Davis: Don't let last week's six-yard disaster discourage you. Davis has an appetizing matchup at Buffalo Sunday and, perhaps even better, backup DeShaun Foster is fighting a gimpy knee.Rams running back Steven Jackson:With quarterback Marc Bulger out again, Jackson becomes the team's top option. In the two games Bulger missed earlier, Jackson rushed for 97 and 179 yards, respectively.
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates:A sprained foot has Gates questionable for Sunday, so stick close to the pregame shows. His backup, Justin Peelle, has a sprained shoulder, so he's not a reliable alternative.Packers running back Samkon Gado:Coach Mike Sherman tired of seeing the rookie fumble and sent him to the bench. You should, too.Giants running back Tiki Barber:Injuries along the offensive line and a tough trip to Seattle make Barber a bench candidate for those with other options.
The top rushing QBs of all time are Randall Cunningham (4,928 yards), Steve Young (4,239) and Fran Tarkenton (3,674).
