PATTON — A volunteer firefighter died from a heart attack while at a fire training school.

Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said 51-year-old John Polimine collapsed after training Saturday at Cambria County's fire school.

Polimine was from Windber, Somerset County, where he belonged to the Scalp Level-Paint Volunteer Fire Company. He had been a member for two years.

Officials with the Volunteer Fireman's Association of Cambria County & Vicinity said it's the first death in more than 55 years that firefighters have gathered for training in the county.

Scalp Level-Paint Fire Chief Michael Alexander said Polimine is the first to die during training or on a fire call in the company's history.

SCRANTON — A former northeastern Pennsylvania judge charged with taking millions of dollars in kickbacks to send youth offenders to for-profit detention facilities will have a change-of-plea hearing in July.Former Luzerne County Judge Michael Conahan signed a plea agreement last week with federal prosecutors.On Monday a federal judge scheduled a hearing on Conahan's plea for July 23.In his order, U.S. District Judge Edwin Kosik said the wait will give the U.S. Supreme Court time to weigh in on a case that could impact Conahan's plea.Conahan and former judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. are accused of taking $2.8 million from the owner and builder of two private detention facilities.Ciavarella's attorney says his client maintains his innocence and will go to trial. Conahan faces up to 20 years in prison.

NEW CASTLE — Lawyers for a 12-year-old boy charged with fatally shotgunning his father's pregnant fiancee want a judge to revise his opinion that the boy should be tried as an adult so they can take a direct appeal to the Pennsylvania Superior Court.-Lawrence County Judge Dominick Motto in March ordered Jordan Brown to stand trial as an adult in the Feb. 20, 2009 slaying of Kenzie Houk. Her unborn son also died in the incident.
