ATWOOD — Authorities say an ice fisherman was killed after falling through the ice on a Western Pennsylvania lake. State police and the Armstrong County coroner's office said 56-year-old James Whitlinger of Avonmore was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at Keystone Lake.

Coroner Brian Myers said a search began at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday after his equipment was found along with holes bored in the ice but with no one around.

County dispatchers said more than 70 emergency responders joined in the search of the 5-mile-long lake near Indiana County.

Myers said Whitlinger drowned about a half-mile south of the Atwood boat launch on the border of Plumcreek and Cowanshannock townships. The death was ruled an accident.

ALTOONA — Authorities in central Pennsylvania say fire claimed the lives of a mother and two young children. Officials in Blair County said the blaze in the Altoona residence was reported just after 11 a.m. Saturday.Coroner Patricia Ross said Jessica Giarth, 31, was killed along with 9-year-old Kea Barnes and 20-month-old Lyric Giarth.Ross said all three died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
