Butler County's great daily newspaper

Special section highlights great county natives

On Wednesday, the Butler Eagle ran its Movers, Shakers and Newsmakers special section, which is the paper’s 2020 Progress edition.

The section highlights many of the accomplishments of county residents who have either brought attention to the county through national or international acclaim or done great things locally to help their neighbors.

Among those profiled was a boxing manager who has trained generations of youths — and eight professional fighters — and continues into his late 80s, the chief engineer for the Standard Steel Car Co., Cranberry Township’s outgoing manager, and a conservationist who was instrumental in the creation of Moraine State Park.

There’s also a story about three men who worked together in Buffalo Township and founded Penn United Technologies as a small startup company in the early 1970s, and another about how the president of Butler County Community College has helped the school expand its reach.

There’s even one about an opera star with roots in the county, and information on a rock star and several actresses and actors who hail from the county.

In other words, a number of very smart and talented people from Butler County have made their mark on the world and done great things for their communities.

Some of them have done so on a grand scale — a developer or industrialist whose work has led to a better future for the county — while others have contributed greatly to their community on a smaller scale — a coach or local business owner — but not receive the praise they deserve.

All of them are essential to the county’s history and well-being, especially at a time like the present when things are unsure and so many people are struggling — both from seven months of the coronavirus and its economic impact on the region.

But the people profiled in this year’s Movers, Shakers and Newsmakers provide hope that people with unique abilities in the county will continue to come forward to share their talents with us.

So, be sure to pick up this year’s Progress section — which ran Oct. 28 — and read about the people from the past to the present who have made Butler County great.
