York, Brown notch horse wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Darey Queen, a two-year-old filly pacer, won a $9,000 race at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows Wednesday. The horse, which is owned and trained by Cranberry Township’s Mitchell York, finished in 1:59 and reasserted her lead after being passed three-quarters of the way through.

On Thursday, first-time starting colt Rose Run Zeke secured first place in a $9,000 Conditioned Pace in 1:55.

Elsewhere on Thursday’s card, County Cong started down a number of late challengers to take a $9,000 Conditioned Trot for “Downtown” Brady Brown of Slippery Rock. The 3-year-old gelding prevailed in 2:00.4, fastest win of his career.

Prex recognized for golf efforts

Lebanon Valley College recognized student-athlete Nathan Prex of Cranberry Township, a member of the men’s golf team. Prex is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in exercise science at The Valley.

The men’s golf team, known as the Flying Dutchmen, finished seventh at the MAC Commonwealth Championships with a two-day score of 726. The Flying Dutchmen had their best round of the year with a team score of 342 at the Muhlenberg Invitational on April 3.

Brown’s arena football team kicked out of league

The Albany Empire, a National Arena League football team owned in part by former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, was kicked out of the league Thursday for failing to fulfill its financial obligations.

The decision to terminate the Empire’s league membership was made on an emergency conference call to discuss the team’s unpaid fees and fines. Brown became a part owner of the team in March.

LSU’s Skenes wins Howser Trophy

LSU's Paul Skenes, projected to be the first or second pick in the amateur draft next month, on Thursday was the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as the nation's outstanding college baseball player.

The junior right-hander leads the nation in strikeouts (188) and the Southeastern Conference in wins (12), ERA (1.77), innings pitched (107) and opponent batting average (.170). Skenes, who the Pittsburgh Pirates might have their eye on with the first pick, will go into the College World Series within 14 strikeouts of Ben McDonald's SEC-record 202 for LSU in 1989.
