LOCK HAVEN — Butler graduate Amy Achesinski, a senior forward on the Mercyhurst College women's basketball team, received first-team All-PSAC West and All-Atlantic Region honors.

Achesinski averaged 17.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game — third and fourth in the PSAC. She reached double figures in all but one game and helped the Lakers post a 15-15 record and earn their first conference tournament berth in 11 years.

Achesinski's college career numbers include 1,704 points, 889 rebounds, 216 assists, 93 blocked shots and 71.5 percent accuracy at the foul line.

NATRONA HEIGHTS — Nine Butler County basketball players will participate in the 15th annual A-K Valley Cager Classic All-Star Games March 26 at Highlands High.The girls game is at 6 p.m. and will include Knoch's Heather Cooper, Freeport's Anna Christy and Nikki Blake, Mars' Alexa Lee and Carly Clark.The boys game is at 8 p.m. and includes Knoch's Nathan Junk, Freeport's Jake Campbell, Mars' Brad Weischedel and Christian Locher.

COVINGTON, Ky. — Firefighters rigged a precarious gangplank of ladders and ropes over the flooded Ohio River and safely rescued 83 people, including former Cincinnati Bengals star Cris Collinsworth, from a floating restaurant that broke free from a pier, authorities say.Covington Fire Department Capt. Chris Kiely said Jeff Ruby's Waterfront restaurant drifted about 85 to 100 yards down the fast, rain-swollen river during the late Friday evening dinner hour and the popular seafood eatery then came to a stop beside a tall bridge as skittish dinner patrons looked on.He said 83 people, led off one by one, were rescued after an effort lasting hours.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An 11-2 start, consecutive wins against ranked teams and the nation’s second highest scorer couldn’t save Keno Davis’ job as men’s basketball coach at Providence College.Davis, whose Friars struggled to compete in the Big East, was fired Friday after three seasons.Providence was 15-17, this season, 4-14 in the Big East for the second straight year.
