Seniors invited to elder fraud session by FBI
An informational presentation on elder fraud will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at the Butler Area Public Library on North McKean Street.
The session will be conducted by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to a news release from library personnel, millions of elderly Americans fall victim to some type of financial fraud or con scheme each year.
Romance, lottery and sweepstakes scams are among those used to steal money from the elderly, the release states.
Seniors are often targeted by scammers because they tend to be trusting and polite, and usually have savings and assets.
Losses among the elderly to scammers equal more than $3 billion in annual losses, and these thefts represent a growing problem.
No registration is necessary for the program Tuesday. All are welcome to attend.
