CRANBERRY TWP — For one township man, it seems honesty was the best policy when police pulled him over for driving erratically.

Stephen McCauley, 23, was charged with driving under the influence after telling police he had “a lot” to drink in the early morning hours of March 26, according to the affidavit. He waived that charge and others to county court Friday, where he'll be arraigned July 10.

Cranberry Township police Officer Mike Kramer was stopped at a red light northbound on Route 19 at the intersection with Rochester Road around 3:30 a.m. March 26, when he noticed a vehicle turn left from Rochester Road onto Route 19 northbound and drive over the raised concrete center divider.

Kramer caught up with the vehicle, a white Suzuki Reno, in the left lane on Route 19 and saw it weaving in its lane. When Kramer came up behind the Suzuki near Marty's Suburban, it slowed down to 30 mph in a 45 mph zone, but continued in the left lane. The vehicle also crossed the yellow line a couple times.

The Suzuki turned left at Glen Eden Road and into the parking lot of the 7-Eleven convenience store at that intersection, and Kramer turned on his lights and initiated a stop.

The driver was identified as McCauley, and Kramer noticed while talking to him that McCauley smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. There was also an open can of Yuengling beside the center console on the passenger side along with several unopened cans in a plastic bag on the passenger seat, police said.

After being asked to perform some sobriety tests, McCauley said he wouldn't do any tests and allegedly told Kramer “You got me,” according to police.

When asked how much he had to drink, McCauley said “a lot,” police said.

Officer Kramer offered to demonstrate the sobriety tests so McCauley could try them, and McCauley repeated that he wasn't doing them and said “Just take me for the blood test,” according to the affidavit.

McCauley was transported to UPMC Passavant Cranberry where he consented to a blood draw that showed his blood alcohol content was 0.214.

In addition to driving under the influence, McCauley faces charges of driving under the influence with blood alcohol content over .16, having an open alcoholic beverage, and related traffic charges. He is free on $15,000 bail.
