CLAY TWP — A mulch fire early this morning caused $10,000 worth of damage to a Chrie Lane residence.

Chief Reid Cambell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department said the cause was likely lit tobacco as there was no evidence of an accelerant or a wiring problem.

After firefighters responded to the 1:53 a.m. 911 call of smoke inside the residence at 120 Chrie Lane, they found owner Joseph J. Pierrel hosing down the mulch, which was adjacent to the house.

But when firefighters dug up the mulch, they found other pieces still were burning.

Crews also checked the basement to ensure smoke was not coming from a second source.

Damages to the split-level house included the exterior siding. Campbell said Pierrel is insured.

The Unionville Volunteer Fire Company assisted West Sunbury at the scene.

About 24 firefighters responded to the 911 call.

Crews left the scene at 3:14 a.m.
