New mobile app to spread Seneca information

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District next month will unveil a new mobile application that will give users information about a variety of school matters.

Once the app is in use, Seneca Valley will no longer use Twitter for getting the word out about school delays or cancellations, and will instead use the new app exclusively, said Linda Andreassi, director of communications.

This was done in part to curb instances of students creating fake Twitter accounts and purposely spreading false information regarding delays or closings.

“Twitter is a very widely used social medium, and my fear is that (students creating fake accounts) would grow,” she said. “We wanted to put that to an end, and the easiest way to do that was to stop using Twitter as a way of notifying parents about delays and cancellations.”

Andreassi noted that the school district will still use Twitter for other functions, just not for weather-related delays.

She noted that the new mobile app will be so much more than just weather-related. Parents will be able to pick from 12 tabs and will be a click away from seeing school menus, student grades, the district’s calendar and other school events.

Andreassi said school officials will unveil the mobile app at the April 13 school board meeting. It is scheduled to go online the next day.
