BUTLER TWP — Butler School District and township police are both investigating reports that an as-yet-unidentified man was on the high school's campus Tuesday, handing out flyers to female students for senior pictures and claiming to be a professional photographer.

Acting Superintendent William Pettigrew and Police Chief John Hays both confirmed that the incident, which apparently took place Tuesday afternoon after school, was under investigation.

Hays said township police received multiple calls about the man's presence on Tuesday, but by the time they arrived at the school no one could be found. Hays said additional information has led police to identify a person they believe to be involved. That person was being tracked down this morning, Hays said, adding that the department is taking the reports seriously.

“If we identify (the individual) as the person involved, some action will be taken,” he said. “I'm not sure exactly what, but some action.”

Pettigrew said district administrators were also alerted Tuesday night and contacted township police, but so far today hadn't received any reports of the man being on campus. He said the district was conducting its own investigation and had instructed security personnel to watch parking lots and other public areas on the high school's campus in case the individual returns.

“Obviously he can't do that,” Pettigrew said,” and if he does, we're going to ask him to leave the property.”
