PARIS - Anastasia Myskina became the first defending champion at the French Open to be eliminated in the opening round today, losing to Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.Myskina was a surprise winner in 2004 when she became the first Russian woman to claim a tennis Grand Slam title. This year she arrived in Paris with a modest record of 11-9 and was the No. 5 seed. She spoke tearfully on the eve of the tournament about her mother, who has been seriously ill.Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport overcame a slow start in the opening match on center court and beat Katarina Srebotnik 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

CINCINNATI - Closer Danny Graves was let go by the Cincinnati Reds Monday, a day after he made an obscene hand gesture at a fan taunting him over his latest poor performance. The club's career saves leader was shocked by the decision to designate him for assignment, a move that ended his eight-year career in Cincinnati. The Reds have 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers. The Reds had lost 18 of their last 23 games, falling out of contention in the NL Central. General manager Dan O'Brien said that Graves' encounter with the fan wasn't the main reason for the move.Graves was 1-1 with a 7.76 ERA and 10 saves this season.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia 76ers fired Jim O'Brien Monday after one season as coach and replaced him with Maurice Cheeks, one of the most popular players in franchise history.Cheeks will be introduced as Philadelphia's 21st head coach at a news conference today.Philadelphia is certainly banking on the former point guard to have a happier homecoming than O'Brien, a Philadelphia native who played for Saint Joseph's. O'Brien's stubbornness and seemingly unwavering belief in a system that didn't fit his players cost him his job despite a 43-39 record and a return to the playoffs.
