Moniteau graduate Ryan Protzman has decided to continue his academic and athletic careers at Thiel College.

Protzman will major in elementary education while competing on the Tomcat football and track and field teams.

He was a three-year letter winner in both sports at Moniteau.

• Karns City graduate Chad Zabicki is also heading to Thiel, where he will major in business and play for the college's men's soccer team.

John Aubrey of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course fired a 68-66-134 to place third at the Tri-State PGA Professional Championship Qualifier/TSPGA Senior Section Championship Thursday at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway.Bob Ford of Oakmont Country Club won the event with a score of 68-62-130 and Roy Vucinich was second with 63-69-132. Ford's second-round score of 62 was a course record.The top eight advance to the PGA Senior National Championship Oct. 19-22 at PGA Golf Club.

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Mathias Gronberg has the lead after the first-round of the International, the PGA Tour's most novel event.Playing at 6,300 feet and using the modified Stableford scoring system, Gronberg scored 13 points to lead Stuart Appleby, Stewart Cink and 2001 champion Tom Pernice Jr. by two.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Annika Sorenstam shot a bogey-free 7-under 66 at the TPC of Scandinavia, breaking the record on her home course to take the first-round lead.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State sophomore Mark Rubin broke his right collar bone and will likely miss the rest of preseason camp.Rubin was injured while diving for a ball in practice on Monday, the first day of drills. He will not need surgery and is expected to miss about four weeks, a team spokesman said Thursday.Penn State opens its season Sept. 2 against Akron.

NEW CASTLE — Barbara Tanner, the wife of former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Chuck Tanner, has died.Tanner, known as Babs, was 78. She died Monday at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle, where she had been since April due to complications from diabetes.Chuck Tanner managed the Pirates to their last World Series title in 1979 and has remained close to the team from his home in Neshannock Township, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Chuck Tanner was named an honorary captain of the National League squad at last month's All-Star Game in Pittsburgh.
