Ferree flies to UFo Tour win
BUFFALO TWP — Alex Ferree hit the tire setup. Boom Briggs didn't.
That might have been the difference in the Saxonburg driver's victory in the Lunarville 33, a UFo Tour Late Model event Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Ferree passed Briggs on Turn 4 of a 19th-lap restart, holding the lead from there to win the 33-lap feature and pick up a $2,000 check.
"(Crew chief) Fred Bratchie is always right when it comes to tires here," Ferree said. "He makes the call. Without him, I'd have no idea what to put on the car."
The feature had six restarts, the final one coming on the 22nd lap.
"Those restarts probably helped Alex because he had the soft tires," Briggs said. "Ours were too hard. We had the wrong tires on the car for that track.
"We needed the perfect setup to beat him."
Briggs had the pole position for the race and led the first 18 laps.
Ferree, the track's two-time defending Late Model points champion, has the lead again this season.
The UFo Tour is in its second year. Ferree won that points title last year as well. Friday night marked the first UFo Tour appearance at Lernerville and Ferree's first career UFo Tour feature win.
"It feels good to win one. I wish the purse was $5,000 instead of $2,000, though," he said, laughing.
While Ferree led the final 15 laps, the second- through sixth-place cars continually traded positions. Briggs wound up second, but he fell back as far as fourth.
Chub Frank was third and Robbie Blair fourth. Gregg Satterlee was once second and finished fifth. Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick moved from 17th to third, but wound up sixth.
"There were two ways to run that top groove," Frank said. "You could ride high and stay there or come up from the middle of the track. Cars would slide down and disrupt everything."
Satterlee said he lost second place when his car got into the back of Ferree on a restart.
"That took me out of it," Satterlee said. "Our tires were right. Everything about the car was good. I suppose I could have gotten a flat tire and a DNF out of that, so we'll take fifth."
In other features:
• Rod George of Kittanning, who turned 50 earlier in the week, started in the front row of the Sprint feature and led from wire to wire.
George held off Ed Lynch Jr., who started 12th and took over second on the 15th lap of the 25-lap feature.
"I was only going to go as fast as I needed to," George said. "I knew Ed would be there. Once I saw him stick his nose up there, I got on the gas a little more."
The win was George's 40th career triumph at Lernerville.
• Del Rougeux Jr. started seventh and won the mistake-filled Modified feature, taking the lead from Jeremiah Shingledecker on a 15th-lap restart.
The race had 10 restarts before its conclusion. Rougeux's win was his third of the year at the Sarver track and first since May 15.
• Bob Egley of Kittanning retook the lead from Bob Lipinski on an 18th-lap restart and claimed the Sportsman Stock feature. It was Egley's second win of the season.
Notes: There were 104 cars in the pits, including 33 Late Models. ... Kevin Bolland began the night two points behind Brian Swartzlander in the Modified points race, but a flat tire prevented Bolland from finishing his heat race. ... Mike Turner of Butler finished a season-best fourth in the Modified feature. ... School bus races and a 100-lap Enduro will take place Tuesday night at Lernerville.
