Martha R. Oesterling
Martha R. Oesterling, 79, of Butler passed away Thursday at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1937, in Mercer, she was a daughter of the late Leonard H. and Sophie S. Maykowski Ringer.
She was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
She was a graduate of Mercer High School. Following high school, she attended and graduated from Jameson School of Nursing in New Castle, where she earned her diploma as a Registered Nurse.
Martha went on to continue her education at Penn State University, where she earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing.
She worked in various fields of nursing. She worked at Butler Memorial Hospital in the Pediatric Unit and Child Psychology, VNA and Personal Touch Home Health, and she worked as a substitute nurse for Butler School District.
She was a director of the Girl Scouts and an avid seamstress who made many dance costumes over the years.
Martha enjoyed working on crafts, ceramics and painting. She also enjoyed camping at the family camp in Cook Forest, horseback and quad riding, the outdoors in general. She had registered Collies she enjoyed showing and traveling on bus tours. She also played Mrs. Claus for many events.
She attended Bible study with her dear friend, Barb Karenbauer, and she would pray daily for her many family and friends. Most of all, she was all about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Terry (Hank) Leyland, Michael (Deb) Oesterling and Martin Oesterling, all of Butler, and Tricia (Oscar) Oesterling-Merlo, of New York City; five grandchildren, Trevor (Christy) Leyland of Butler, Levi Leyland of Slippery Rock, and Heather, Benjamin and Joseph Oesterling, a grandson-in-law, Josh Greynold, and a granddaughter-in-law, Kearsten Ihlenfeld, all of Butler; five great-grandchildren, Braylon Littlejohn and Isla, Willem, Eloise and Cora Leyland; one brother, Hollis Filson of Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Oesterling, who passed away Feb. 28, 2003; two grandchildren, Emily Leyland and Calvin Littlejohn; one brother, Bill Ringer; and one sister, Peg Horvath.
OESTERLING — Friends of Martha R. Oesterling, who died Thursday, July 13, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be Celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler.
