Sean Sokolowski is reluctant to accept any praise for the work he does with Adams Area Fire District.

“My job gives me the opportunity to do more than the average person,” he said. “I work for two career fire departments. I don't have a Monday through Friday job.”

Sokolowski of Mars was recognized as the 2016 Firefighter of the Year by his peers in the Adams Area Fire District. The 24-year-old has received the award twice, but says he'd like others to be recognized for their work as well. His extra efforts as a volunteer are just a benefit of his flexible work schedule, he said.

Fire Chief Bill Hayes said the Firefighter of the Year recipient is chosen by the membership of the fire district and the award is presented at the annual installation dinner in February.

“People have described him by saying, 'If you need something done you can count on him,'” Hayes said. “He's a go-to person and has continued to lead the way in training.”

Hayes said Sokolowski responded to the most fire calls the last three years.
