SUMMIT TWP — Two adults have been charged in connection to a shooting in a township residence Sunday.

Charges were filed Tuesday in District Judge Lewis Stoughton's office against Ryan K. Bowser, 40, and Carolyn S. Gaiser, 42. Both will face two counts of endangering the welfare of children and two counts of recklessly endangering another person. The charges are misdemeanors.

State police say a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother Sunday afternoon inside their Moran Road residence. The victim sustained a leg injury and was flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. He did not have any broken bones but was going to have surgery to remove bullet fragments, police said Sunday.

An update on the boy's condition was unavailable Tuesday.

The boys were home alone at the time of the incident, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday by police. The 10-year-old told police the boys heard noises coming from their basement they thought were being made by a person.

They were afraid, but did not have access to a phone to call 911, so they retrieved an unloaded handgun from a cabinet in the living room and found ammunition in a container in the kitchen, the complaint said.

The boys were loading the gun while sitting on the living room couch and it went off, hitting the 11-year-old's leg. After trying to bandage the leg, the boys got help from a neighbor, who called 911, the complaint said.

The gun, a .357-caliber revolver, is registered to Gaiser.

During the investigation several unloaded firearms were located inside the residence belonging to both Gaiser and Bowser. Children and Youth Family Services was notified of the incident, police said.

Since the charges are misdemeanors, both Gaiser and Bowser will be summoned to appear in the district court. They will not be arrested.
