CINCINNATI — Former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall has been hospitalized in Florida for tests for a recurrence of lymphoma, his son said.The 78-year-old Nuxhall was in Sarasota for the start of the team's spring training when he went to Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Wednesday for previously scheduled tests, son Kim Nuxhall said.That's when doctors found the recurrence of lymphoma, first detected in September 2003.
LAS VEGAS — Phil Jackson, Chris Mullin and Dick Vitale led the list of 15 finalists for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.They were joined by former players Adrian Dantley and Richie Guerin; coaches Roy Williams, Eddie Sutton and Bob Hurley Sr.; owner Bill Davidson; and the 1966 Texas Western NCAA championship team.Referee Mendy Rudolph, Yugoslavian coach Mirko Novosel, Spanish coach Pedro Ferrandiz and former U.S. women's basketball coaches Van Chancellor and Harley Redin also were selected by the four screening committees that nominate finalists.
KAHUKU, Hawaii — Morgan Pressel moved a step closer to becoming the youngest player in LPGA Tour history to win a 54-hole event, shooting a 4-under 68 Friday for a share of the second-round lead in the season-opening SBS Open.The 18-year-old Pressel was tied with her 2002 Junior Solheim Cup captain, Sherri Steinhauer, and Paula Creamer at 7-under 137. Steinhauer and Creamer shot 70s.
CLEVELAND — Reliever Keith Foulke, on the mound when Boston ended its 86-year World Series drought, retired Friday, just as he was about to begin competing for a closer's job with the Cleveland Indians.Foulke signed a $5 million, one-year free agent contract with the Indians in January. The right-hander had battled injury problems the past two seasons, and last year he was replaced as Boston's closer by rookie Jonathan Papelbon.The 34-year-old recently had elbow soreness and informed the Indians of his decision Thursday.
