Local products key SRU track
Butler High product Mason McLaughlin and Slippery Rock High graduate Ethan Geisler helped Slippery Rock University grab two relay titles Saturday at the SRU Men’s Track and Field Invitational.
The duo teamed with D.J. Chisom and Trevor Foley in winning the 400-meter relay with a time of 42.63 seconds.
McLaughlin and Geisler then shared time with Foley and Kevin Jewel to win the 1,600 relay at 3:22.45.
McLaughlin added a season-best time of 50.13, earning first place in the 400 run.
Cameron Daugherty hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4.9 meters while taking first place in the men’s pole vault.
• In the women’s meet, Amanda Seigworth (400 hurdles) and Whitney Hendershot (high jump), both put up NCAA provisional efforts.
Seigworth posted the fifth-fastest time in the nation in the hurdles with a first-place time of 1:00.94, while Hendershot won the high jump at 1.7 meters.
Women’s LacrosseAmy Halls became the first player in Slippery Rock University history to tally 150 career goals, scoring six goals in a 19-5 win over Kutztown.Halls now has 153 goals in her decorated career.Emma VanDenburg chipped in with two goals and four assists and goalie Kat Elkins made six saves in earning her eighth victory of the season.SRU (8-4, 3-4) will travel to Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday.
BaseballWith a pair of wins over Gannon on Sunday, SRU (19-11, 8-4) took over first place in the PSAC-West standings.The Rock won by scores of 19-1 and 5-2. Derek Carr and Lee Foxton both tallied three hits in the twinbill, with Foxton adding three RBI.Joby Lapkowicz earned the win in Game 1, striking out nine and walking two in six innings, giving up just one run on four hits in that span.George Hebert won the second game, fanning four and walking none while allowing two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
SoftballShaylee Ianno tossed a seven-hit shutout in SRU’s 4-0 win over Mercyhurst.The effort, which included six strikeouts, came in the second game of a doubleheader.The Rock lost the first game 8-5.Jenna Geibel registered two hits and two runs batted in and Kirsten Brant went 3-for-3 with a run scored to support Ianno in the second contest.In the first game, Brant singled and homered while driving in a pair of runs for SRU (19-9, 6-6).
