SRU's Jewell sets mark

Slippery Rock University's Kevin Jewell broke his own school record on the way to victory in the 800-meter run on Saturday at the Ashland (Ohio) Alumni Open.

Jewell's time of 1:49.86 — beating his previous best by four hundredths of a second — moved him up to fourth in the nation this spring and hit an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark.

Slippery Rock High grad Ethan Geisler reached the NCAA provisional standard in the 400 hurdles during a second-place finish with a time of 52.89 seconds. Trevor Foley wasn't far behind, finishing fifth at 55.37 seconds.

Seneca Valley grad Jonathan Boyd took eighth in the 110 hurdles at 15.02 seconds, while Geisler hit the PSAC mark and claimed 11th with a 15.45.

Cameron Daugherty toppled the NCAA provisional standard with a clearance of 4.99 meters in the pole vault.

A total of 32 SRU men qualified for the PSAC championships on the day.

Butler grad Katelyn Wetzel swept the short sprints for SRU with victories in the 100 dash (12.51) and 200 dash (25.01) Saturday at the Ashland (Ohio) Alumni Open.Janine Powis collected a first-place finish in the 1,500 run, while Julia Cain and Ashley West hit NCAA provisional marks in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.Freeport grad Bronte Soul claimed third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.94 meters.Slippery Rock High grad Breanna Northcott was 20th in the shot put at 11.1 meters and qualified for the PSAC championships with a toss of 35.06 meters for a 24th-place finish in the discus.In all, 21 women from The Rock qualified for PSACs during the event.

California (Pa.) swept a PSAC West doubleheader from Slippery Rock University on Saturday at Consol Energy Park.The Vulcans (31-14, 13-7) erased a 4-0 hole for a 10-6 victory in Game 1, before a seven-run fourth inning paced a 12-3 Game 2 win.The losses snapped a five-game win streak for SRU (29-17, 11-9), which dropped to fourth place in the division — two games behind Mercyhurst — while the sweep tied California with Gannon for first.The Rock will close the regular season with a four-game series against Gannon. A Friday doubleheader in Erie starts at 1 p.m., before a 4 p.m. Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day doubleheader at SRU's Jack Critchfield Park.
