Youth parade their cattle at Keystone Junior Beef Classic

FRANKLIN TWP — The Northwest Pennsylvania Cattlemen's Association sponsored the annual Keystone Junior Beef Classic May 24 and 25 at the Butler Fairgrounds.

More than 100 young people under the age of 21 exhibited their beef cattle, according to Carol Miller, one of the organizers.

Exhibitors came from Maryland, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Breeds included Angus, Hereford, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Shorthorn, Simmental, and cross-bred. Overall, 76 breeding stock and 93 steers were shown.

Butler County beef breeders had the largest showing with 27 steers.

Heather Cox of Evans City won the supreme champion female with her Shorthorn heifer.

Matthew Drobezko, who lives in Butler County but belongs to the Lawrence County 4-H club, displayed the supreme champion steer.

Other Butler County exhibitors were Brian Benson of North Washington; Raymond Boldstridge of Chicora; Pam Cox of Evans City; Andrew Cranmer of Butler; Colt Filges of Butler; Rebecca and Zach Frazier, both of Butler; Christie Geary of Sarver; Faith Govan of Valencia; Connor, Dillon and Shane Harvey, all of Chicora; Jordan Kennedy of Butler; Brock King of Karns City; Sara Lang of Harrisville; Jonny and Paul Merten, both of Evans City; Gil and Nick Osche, both of Cabot; Ben Patton of Prospect; Jacob Salvatora of Butler; Amanda, Katelen and Jake Shuler, all of Fenelton; Travis Steele of Chicora; and Christian and Kyler Valecko, both of Butler.

The Keystone Classic has been held for 12 years at the fairgrounds. Before moving to Butler, the show was at the Crawford County Fairgrounds for many years.

Organizers of the show are Bob Calvert, Mercer County; Don Hunter; Dave Cox; Alvin and Donna Vogel and sons, Luke and Charlie; Gary Glenn; and Miller, all of Butler County.
