ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Knoch graduate and Penn State Behrend men's swimmer Matt Karenbauer picked up his second individual title in as many days Friday at the Allegheny Empire Championships.

Karenbauer repeated as champion in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 56.85 seconds. He had won the 100 butterfly Thursday.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown collected two more wins during harness racing Friday at The Meadows, giving him seven for the week.

Brown drove Humboldt to victory in an $11,500 Conditioned Pace and Hypothetical to a triumph in a $7,200 Conditioned Pace.

[naviga:h3]8 Butler bowlers head to regionals[/naviga:h3]

BUTLER TWP — Eight members of the Butler varsity bowling team will compete in the Pa. Western Regionals March 6 at North Versailles Bowl.

Chris Huff and Rocco Rice qualified on the boys side.

At the WPIBL Girls Singles Championships Thursday at Wildlife Lanes in Lower Burrell, Harley Kriess led the Golden Tornado with a 202 game and 521 series. She placed 15th overall.

The top 40 bowlers from the WPIBL tourney earn regional spots. Reegan Malis finished 29th, Rachael Blose 33rd and Madison Weiland 37th. Lauren Bash and Natalie Coughenour qualified for regionals based on their regular season averages.

Both of Butler's boys and girls teams qualified for the Regional Team Championships March 7.

BOSTON — The NHL-leading Boston Bruins freed up salary cap space Friday by trading veteran forward David Backes and a first-round draft pick to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Ondrej Kase.

Anaheim also acquired 20-year-old prospect Axel Andersson, a defenseman.

[naviga:h3]Jackets' top scorer lost for season[/naviga:h3]

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Injuries to key players keep coming for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who now have lost top goal-scorer Oliver Bjorkstrand for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old forward fractured an ankle in Thursday night's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Bjorkstrand slid hard into the back boards at the end of regulation and limped off the ice. He did not play in overtime.

General manager Jarmo Kekalainen said Friday that Bjorkstrand will be out eight to 10 weeks and might need surgery.
