PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals will open the preseason the same way they ended the NFL season two months ago: by playing each other.

The Super Bowl opponents will meet in a preseason opener at 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 13 in Pittsburgh.

The Cardinals have not played a preseason game in Pittsburgh since before the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. although the teams met in St. Louis in 1985 and in suburban Phoenix in 2006.

The Super Bowl champion Steelers will play their other preseason home game against Buffalo at 7:30 Saturday, Aug. 29.

The Steelers' road exhibition games are the weekend of Aug. 22 to -24 in Washington and either Sept. 3 or 4 at Carolina, the sixth consecutive season that Pittsburgh and Carolina will meet to close the preseason.

CLARION — Area basketball players have been named to the D9sports.com all-district basketball team.Scott Booth of Union and Allan Eaton of A-C Valley made the boys first team. Booth averaged 21.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and two assists per game. He is the leading active scorer in District 9 with 1,136 career points.Eaton averaged 17.2 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Falcons.Ashley Campbell of Karns City made the girls first team. She averaged 19.6 points and 10 rebounds per game and scored 1,028 career points.Tina Lipps of Union and Maura McCalin of Moniteau made third team. Lipps averaged 11.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game while McCaslin averaged 14 points and 5.7 assists per contest.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Seneca Valley High graduate Zach Jackson will open the season on the Cleveland Indians' major league roster, according to ESPN.com.Jackson, a left-hander, was told by manager Eric Wedge that he will be with the team when Cleveland opens the season in Texas April 6."I'm excited, actually close to speechless right now," Jackson told ESPN. Jackson was one of four players acquired by Cleveland in the July trade that sent CC Sabathia to the Brewers.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in an exhibition game Monday at Deer Lakes High School.The game is schedule to start at 7 p.m. and a donation of canned goods or money to benefit the West Deer Food Bank is the price of admission.This is the first time a SRU men's soccer team has faced a professional squad.
