NFL free agency is madness

It’s March Madness time.

No. I am not talking about college basketball. I should be. But I’m not.

I’m talking about NFL free agency.

There is no doubt the NFL is the king of all things sports in the this country. The league is generating all kinds of buzz this week because players — some of them high profile ones — are changing zip codes.

The games on the field have been over for six weeks, yet the NFL still dominates news cycles all over the country.

There was a time — and not long ago, I might add — when you had to wait until the next day to get the juicy details on the latest mega transaction.

Now, all you need is a Twitter account and you get the news in an instant.

Adam Schefter, John Clayton and Rich Eisen have clubbed fingers by now with the amount of tweets they have sent into cyber space.

This free agency has been even more mad-capped than any I can remember.

Here’s some of the highlights:

• Elvis has left the building. Probably to repeatedly beat a fax machine with a baseball bat in an abandoned field like in the movie “Office Space.”

Now former Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil thought he had a deal in place that would have saved the Broncos cap space while keeping him on the roster. But a fax machine snafu caused the paper work to arrive after the 4 p.m. deadline Friday.

Oops. Denver had to release Dumervil or it would have been on the hook for $13 million.

• Will Dolphins get WR Mike Wallace for 60 minutes? Probably not. They’re more likely to get Morley Safer.

Miami gave Wallace, the speedster who alienated himself from Steelers’ teammates, ownership and fans with his protracted holdout, a ton of money.

There is no truth to the rumor Wallace dropped the pen several times as he was signing the mega-contract.

• Quoth the Raven: “I’m outta here.” The Ravens traded receiver Anquan Bolden. Ray Lewis retired. Paul Kruger left for the real Browns. Ed Reed will sign somewhere that is not Baltimore. Well, they have Joe Flacco.

This is good news for the Steelers.

• Bad news for the Steelers. Pittsburgh’s back is up against the wall when it comes to the salary cap.

It’s so bad, the Steelers may not have the money to match a potential Patriots’ offer to restricted free agent Emmanuel Sanders.

There’s always Darrius Heyward-Bey. The Steelers nearly killed the dude last season with a vicious hit. The least they could do is give him a job.
