PITTSBURGH — The body of a gunman shot by University of Pittsburgh campus police after he shot and killed one person and wounded six others at a psychiatric hospital last week still hasn’t been claimed by his parents, who’ve apparently been notified but remained on a sailing trip Wednesday.

John Shick’s body is in the morgue, Allegheny County medical examiner Dr. Karl Williams said.

Shick is believed to have had a history of mental illness. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which operates the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic where the shootings occurred March 8, has said confidentiality laws prevent them from saying if he was a patient.

Shick’s parents, Laurence and Susan Shick, were notified of his death when Williams used the U.S. Coast Guard to get a message to them Sunday through a phone listed at an address in Green Cove Springs, Fla. But a reporter who went to the address Monday found it was merely a mail drop at a boating dock, where the harbor master said the couple had yet to return.

The Shicks have not answered their phones nor responded to e-mails sent to an address listed on the blog about their voyages.
