Businesses study cyber threats
BUTLER TWP — The inaugural Technology Symposium 2013 will provide businesses an opportunity to learn about cyber threats and how to minimize the risk of being compromised.
The half-day event will be June 25 at Founders Hall at Butler County Community College. It will start with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and feature technology experts who will speak about online security.
Technology-related vendors also will set up during the event, which will conclude after lunch at 1:15 p.m.
Teaming up to present the seminar are the Tri-County Technology Consortium, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, BC3 and Butler County Business Matters.
Scheduled workshops are:
• Dangers of peer-to-peer networking, 8:20 a.m. — J. Andrew Tormasi, federal project manager for Tiversa, a Pittsburgh firm that specializes in peer-to-peer networking security, will address the dangers of using file-sharing software and how businesses can make sure their sensitive information does not end up on the Web.
• Social networking security, 9 a.m. — Cynthia Closkey, owner of Big Big Design, a Web communications firm in Butler, will talk about how businesses and employees can stay secure while using social media.
• Identity theft, 10:05 a.m. — Darren Fischer, a special agent with the state Department of Revenue’s Bureau of Criminal Tax Investigations, and Bill Valentine, vice president of global security investigations for BNY Mellon, will talk about how businesses can better protect themselves and their customers.
• Security risk management and computer forensics, 11:10 a.m. — Joe Harford, founder of Reclamere, a Blair County data security firm, will address proper data destruction, computer forensics, data recovery, E-discovery, litigation support and security risk management.
• Cyber security today, 12:30 p.m. — J. Keith Mularski, a supervisory special agent out of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, will deliver the keynote message on how cyber security has changed over the years and what businesses need to know.
