No tax increase for city residents

Butler residents won't see an increase in taxes next year, as per the budget proposed at Tuesday's city council meeting.

The council voted Tuesday to fix the tax rate at 44 mills for 2022, setting the budget's proposed general fund at approximately $10.5 million. Last year, the council increased millage by 0.75 for 2021.

“There is not a decrease; there is just no more increase,” said Mayor Ben Smith.

Included in the budget proposal were the salaries and wages of city employees, which the mayor said gives appointed officials such as the city clerk and code official an average wage increase of about 3.5 percent for the year.

In other business, the city will soon wrap up its renovations of the pickleball courts in Ritts Park. The city will pay Asphalt Surface Enterprises Inc. $23,000 to paint and seal the courts in the spring, which will be paid through the Greenways and Trails grant.

The council also accepted an agreement with the Butler YMCA to allow it to hold summer camp at Memorial Park for a price of $3,000.

Councilman Jeff Smith said the amount is an increase from what the organization paid the city for its last summer camp, which was agreed upon two years ago.
