Phipps' Spring Flower Show takes visitors on world tour

Ideas for a backyard garden abound in and around the sunlit paths of the Phipps' Spring Flower Show, taking place now through April 15 at the conservatory and botanical gardens at One Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH — Flower bulbs such as daffodils and tulips may be just poking their heads up outside, but Phipps’ Spring Flower Show boasts an array of plants taking visitors on a trip around the world.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens annual Spring Flower Show, this year with a theme of world destinations, will transport visitors on a tour of places like the South Pacific, Greece, China, Holland, France and the United Kingdom.

In the Palm Court, large human forms in brilliant colors complement bright blooms. Other rooms feature iconic sights such as volcanic moss mountains, Buckingham Palace guard topiaries, Greek columns, a Parisian café and flower market, and a Chinese moon gate.

As a special highlight, the historic South Conservatory will pay homage to Holland in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Distinctively Dutch Festival. This space is all about tulips arranged in geometric swaths, but also includes a windmill and oversized Dutch shoes for kids to try on for a photo opportunity.

Nearly 15,000 tulips will be displayed in the outdoor entrance beds, too.

The adventure continues in the new Tropical Forest India exhibit, which contains a healing garden, tea and spice market displays, and a temple façade.

The Spring Flower show continues through April 15. Hours are daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 10 p.m. Fridays.

Admission costs $12 for adults; $11 for senior citizens age 62 and older and students with ID; and $9 for children ages 2 to 18.

Brunch in Bloom will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays during the show; registration is required.
