SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University head football coach George Mihalik has been named the American Football Coaches Association Division II Region 1 Coach of the Year.

He received the honor in voting by his head and assistant coaching peers in the region, which includes 30 teams from the PSAC, Mountain East and Northeast-10 conferences.

Mihalik guided The Rock to a 9-3 record that included SRU's first Division II playoff appearance in 14 years. The Rock won the PSAC West title as well.

Mihalik was previously named AFCA regional Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University linebacker Quindell Dean has been named second team All-America by Beyond Sports Network.Quarterback Nigel Barksdale, receiver John Schademan and punter James McCombie earned third-team honors while offensive tackle Cory Tucker received honorable mention.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas coach Mack Brown declined to say whether the Alamo Bowl will be his final game, amid intense speculation following another disappointing season that began with the Longhorns talking about becoming national championship contenders again.Speaking to reporters for the first time since multiple published reports this week indicated that he might step down, Brown said he has yet to talk with new Texas athletic director Steve Patterson and university President Bill Powers about the job he has held since 1998.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Jameis Winston walked away with another major award, the latest national prize to put on his mantle. He might want to save a spot for the Heisman Trophy.The Florida State star headlined a big night for the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning the Davey O'Brien Award as the country's top quarterback at the annual College Football Awards Show at Disney. Winston also won the Walter Camp player of the year award in a separate announcement.Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron won the Maxwell Award for player of the year.

SAN FRANCISCO — Michael Morse and the San Francisco Giants reached agreement on a one-year, $6 million contract, and he is expected to be the team’s starting left fielder.The deal is pending a physical, assistant general manager Bobby Evans said.
