HARRISBURG — Junior high wrestler Christian Sequete of Butler placed sixth in the 11-12-year-old 135-pound bracket at the PA Junior Wrestling State Championships in Harrisburg last weekend.

Freeport freshmen win hockey title

Robbie Reichenbaugh scored four goals and added two assists as Freeport defeated Hampton, 6-5, to win the PIHL Division 4 freshman championship game recently.

Tanner Hill added a pair of goals for the Yellowjackets and Kyle Hazelett had an assist. Morgan Penn made 33 saves in goal.

Grove City hosting rugby tournamentGROVE CITY — Grove City College will host seven schools in the 2013 National Small College Rugby Central East 7s Regional Qualifier April 13.Winning teams earn a berth in the National Small College Rugby Organization championship.Pool games will be played on the college’s No’s 5 and 6 intramural fields, knockout rounds and finals will be played at Thorn Field. Games begin at 10 a.m. with the title game slated for 8 p.m.Participating colleges and universities are Allegheny, Ashland, Carnegie Mellon, Denison, Fairmont State, Notre Dame College, Robert Morris and Grove City.

Pitt running back Shell takes time offPITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh running back Rushel Shell is taking time off from football to deal with what coach Paul Chryst is calling “challenges” off the field.Shell rushed for 641 yards and four touchdowns during his freshman season last fall and is projected to be the starting tailback for the Panthers when they open fall camp. Chryst said his primary concern is for Shell’s well-being and that Shell has the program’s full support.Shell, from Hopewell, Pa., located about two hours east of Pittsburgh, set the state career high school rushing record during his career at Hopewell High, rushing for 9,078 yards.

Mets lose Santana for 2013 seasonNEW YORK — Johan Santana may have thrown his final pitch for the New York Mets and perhaps even the last of his big league career.The Mets said Thursday the two-time Cy Young Award winner probably has re-torn the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and likely will need a second operation that would sideline him for the entire season. Santana missed 2011 following his first shoulder surgery.Santana had surgery on Sept. 14, 2010, and did not make it back to the major leagues until last April 5. He went 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA in 21 starts last year and threw the first no-hitter in team history on June 1 against St. Louis.
