CONNEAUT LAKE — Parts of the historic, cash-strapped Conneaut Lake Park could reopen by October if a proposed lease goes through.

The lease reached Monday is between the park's board of trustees and a group of local businessman.

The park is 116 years old. It has been plagued by a variety of financial problems in recent years, leading to its closure.

Board chairman Jack Moyers says the lease calls for the renovation and reopening of Hotel Conneaut, the opening of the Beach Club bar and the construction of residential condominiums.

The lease would be for 49 years. Developer Greg Sutterlin says renovations to the Beach Club will begin Tuesday and it should be open by the end of August.

ERIE — New findings suggests rainy weather might spoil some days at Erie beaches in an unexpected way: by driving up the likelihood of E. coli bacteria in the water. The report by the Natural Resource Defense Counsel says pollution tracking shows swimming advisories were issued just six times last summer at Presque Isle State Park. That's down from 53 E. coli health warnings in 2006 and 39 in 2005.But officials who issued the report says that might be a result of a drier summer in 2007. Much of the E. coli in the Great Lakes is carried by stormwater and sewage overflows. So far this summer, there have been seven swimming advisories and it could get worse. August tends to be the month when the most pollution is detected.

MAMMOTH — The hogs gathering at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds don't snort or say oink. These 'hogs' belch exhaust fumes and are driven by about 25,000 members of the National Bikers Roundup that meets Wednesday through Sunday.Officials hope the bikers will pump about $7 million into the local economy. The fairgrounds are located in Mount Pleasant Township, about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The gathering is the group's 31st annual event.Organizers say it's more of a family-oriented event than some biker rallies because most of these motorcycle enthusiasts are urban professionals, including doctors, lawyers and police officers. The rally is open to the public and attendees are donating canned goods to a local food bank.
