Repairs under way after water damage at VA
BUTLER TWP — Workmen are making repairs to the Community Living Center at VA Butler Healthcare after ice dams on the roof caused water damage to six of the 60 residential rooms.
Also, frozen groundwater drains in the basement window wells caused damage to a wall in the pharmacy staff break room and a frozen sprinkler pipe damaged the ceiling in the auditorium.
The auditorium is temporarily closed, while the Community Living Center and pharmacy remain open.
Amanda Kurtz, spokesman for the VA facility, said one veteran was transferred to VA Pittsburgh Healthcare and two that are scheduled for discharge this week were transferred to contract community nursing homes closer to their homes.
Complete drying of the area and restoration work is under way. The exact completion time is unknown at this time, she said.
She said engineering options are being weighed to mitigate future problems with ice on the roof.
