PITTSBURGH — Authorities have arrested one suspect and were trying to identify and catch a second in the shooting of a Pittsburgh-area police officer who was hit with three bullets when he arrived at what police called a drug-related home invasion in progress.

Myles Hutchinson, 21, of McKeesport, was arrested Tuesday and awaiting arraignment on attempted homicide, felony assault on a law officer, as well as robbery and other crimes relating to the home invasion in which Clairton Officer James Kuzak was wounded Monday night.

Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said Kuzak was one of three Clairton officers who responded to a call from a home about 10:45 p.m. reporting an armed home invasion. Moffatt said Hutchinson and another man police were still trying to identify Tuesday forced their way into the home with guns, threatening to shoot a man and woman who lived there and two children, an 8-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy.

The suspects were looking for unspecified drugs and money and Hutchinson had begun sexually assaulting the woman in an upstairs room when Kuzak arrived at the back door, while the other officers covered the side and front doors, respectively, Moffatt said.

That’s when police heard the suspects say, “We’re going to have to shoot our way out’ or something to that effect,” Moffatt said.

Without warning, Hutchinson and the other suspect burst through a rear door and began firing at Kuzak, who had just knocked and announced the police presence, Moffatt said.

Police believe both suspects fired, but ballistics tests have yet to confirm that or determine who fired the shots that wounded Kuzak.

“There is a possibility he may be paralyzed, but that’s still being investigated by the medical officials,” Moffatt said.

Police were on the trail of the second suspect, but hadn’t arrested or even located the suspect by the time they held a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Although he only recently became a police officer in Clairton, Kuzak is a law enforcement veteran.

He spent 13 years as a police officer in Peters Township, a more upscale Pittsburgh suburb before quitting for a job in the private sector last year. He recently joined the Clairton police as a part-time officer and was working two shifts a week.
