County filled with dedication to academic success

This week, we’ve had the pleasure to report on academic achievements in both the Seneca Valley and Moniteau school districts.

The Moniteau Academic Decathlon team, headed by coach Kristy Hershey, will be flying to Frisco, Texas, for the national competition April 27 to 29.

Hershey said the Moniteau squad won its place in the national contest by being one of two schools out of 13 competitors to win at the state competition at Thiel College on March 3 and 4, a place well-earned through lengthy after-school and weekend study sessions.

To the south, Seneca Valley High School’s mock trial team, and the entire school, are celebrating the team’s status as the first in school history to advance to the state championship competition level.

Only 14 teams of 312 statewide advanced from regional to state competition, which was held in late March at the Dauphin County Courthouse. Brieana Nassan, Seneca Valley High School gifted support teacher, said the team’s commitment to perfecting their case have been remarkable.

It’s extremely uplifting to see so much effort come from our students, not to mention such raw intelligence. They are in competition with and prevail against schools likely much larger than theirs, and their passion and dedication pay off.

Likewise, their coaches take time away from their personal lives and families to make sure these students are prepared to compete and see their aspirations realized, and attribute it all to student effort.

“These students are a true testament to the power of teamwork and the rewards that come with unwavering perseverance,” Nassan said in a news release.

We commend the teams and coaches on their outstanding achievements, and we’re certain it won’t stop here.
