The county Area Agency on Aging is scrambling to find housing for the 31 elderly, disabled or mentally challenged people who call the YWCA Personal Care Residence home, as the facility will close on Sept. 24.

Elizabeth Short, the Butler YWCA's interim president and CEO, announced the facility's closure on Thursday. A news release from Short said the other programs at the YWCA will remain open.

“We are truly saddened by this situation,” Short said in the statement. “Over the years, we have been proud to provide low-cost, compassionate care to many members of the Butler community.”

The YWCA is partnering with the Area Agency on Aging to place the individuals in other accommodations.

Beth Herold, director of the Agency on Aging, has a huge white board in her office with each of the residents' names along with notes about the level of care they require.

She said she attended the meeting on Wednesday where the residents and families were informed that their home would be closing down.

“It's been a nice place for them because it's in town and they can walk around or be taken to festivals and church,” Herold said. “When they told those people, they were just heartbroken. It was one of the saddest things I've seen.”
