Albert Whalen
Albert Joseph Whalen, 94, of Ellwood City, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township.
Born in Ashland, Pa., on Oct. 25, 1928, Albert was the son of the late Albert and Marie Althoff Whalen.
After high school, Albert attended the Williamson College of the Trades, where he earned his degree in brick masonry. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as a military police officer during the Korean War. Once he was honorably discharged, he attended Florence Alabama Teachers College and became a Philadelphia police officer for 18 years.
Albert was a member of Divine Grace Parish, where he volunteered with the bereavement committee. He was also a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 75 years.
Albert loved life and enjoyed every day to the fullest. He worked three jobs at a time to take care of his family.
On June 16, 1951, Albert married the love of his life, the former Mary Bernice Monaghan. They were married for 41 years and had 12 children.
Albert is survived by his children, Lyndanne (Donald) Blahovec of Harmony, Robert (Bernadette) Whalen of Broomall, Pa., Thomas Whalen of Philadelphia, Theresa Holmes of Philadelphia, David (Judy) Whalen of Folsom, Pa., Janice (Todd) Wessner of Auburn, Pa., Patricia (Joe) Mitchell of Bear, Del., Rosemarie (Deb) Whalen-Doleniak of Indio, Calif., Eileen Ordonez of King George, Va., Judith (Jim) Geist of Cabot, and Mary (Joe) Nilan of Essington, Pa.; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Linda Whalen of Essington, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Albert was preceded in death by his second wife, Etta Hall-Whalen; his son, Albert Whalen; his grandson, Todd Wessner; his son-in-law, Sonny Holmes; and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Esther Whalen.
WHALEN — Friends of Albert Joseph Whalen, who died Saturday, April 8, 2023, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the JOSEPH A. TOMON JR. FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 97 Grim Ave., Ellport.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Redeemer Church, 415 Fourth St., Ellwood City.
Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
