State getting $266 million to replace lead water pipes

U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman, both Democrats, announced Friday, April 7, that the state is receiving $265.9 million in federal funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to make drinking water safer and cleaner.

The funding, bolstered by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, will remove contaminants such perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances from the water supply and improve water infrastructure by replacing lead pipes.

The EPA is distributing the money from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The infrastructure law allowed the EPA to increase this funding. Pennsylvania’s funding to replace lead pipes increased by 64% this fiscal year.

The infrastructure law is investing more than $50 billion in water and wastewater infrastructure improvements across the country between 2022 and 2026. It is the federal government’s single largest investment in water, Casey and Fetterman said.
