3 injured in head-on crash; car catches fire

BUTLER TWP — Three adults and a child were taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital today following a two-vehicle accident on South Benbrook Road in which one vehicle caught fire.

Butler Township police on the scene said none of the adults’ injuries were serious and the child appeared uninjured, but was taken to the hospital for observation.

According to residents along Benbrook Road near its intersection with Bryson Road, a Chevrolet Cobalt was headed north along Benbrook Road at about 1:30 p.m. when it crossed the center line and struck a Honda Odyssey van, driving south, head-on.

Police said it is unknown why the car crossed into the oncoming lane.

After impact, both vehicles came to rest in the north lane of Benbrook Road, about 100 yards apart.

Witnesses said the mother and child in the Cobalt escaped the vehicle before a small fire that originated in the engine compartment engulfed the entire car.

A man who was driving the van had to be extricated. The third adult also was in the van.
