Anderson, BlueSox blank Ironmen
Butler needed seven innings out of Jon Anderson after a wild 14-inning win on Thursday night depleted the bullpen.
The BlueSox not only got seven innings from Anderson, a right-handed Slippery Rock University pitcher and Grove City High graduate, they received seven stellar frames from him in an 8-0 win over Lorain County at Pullman Park Friday night.
The near-capacity crowd saw the same Anderson that tossed a seven-inning shutout last week against Richmond.
“He pitched really, really well,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. “He commanded the strike zone, didn’t get deep in a lot of counts. He had one inning when I think he threw 20 or 25 pitches, but he battled out of it.”
Anderson struck out six and walked three while scattering just five hits. The only real problem he had was in the seventh inning when he gave up a single and walk with one out. He induced two groundouts to end that threat.
Anderson has now thrown 14 straight scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 1.96 this season.
“I’m feeling good right now,” Anderson said. “I’m just in a groove right now. I have a lot of confidence and I’m just going to keep working hard.”
Anderson struggled in his first start of the season, giving up four runs and eight hits in just 4 1-3 innings on May 31 at West Virginia.
But he’s 2-0 at Pullman Park this year and has given up nary a run in the pitcher’s park.
“A lot of it is confidence,” Rebyanski said. “If you come out there with a bad mental attitude, it can carry over. Hopefully, you have a short memory and he did that after his first outing. He said, ‘Hey, I’ll do better next time.’”
And the next time.
Anderson received plenty of run support. Speed — a familiar refrain for the BlueSox this season — played a big role.
Anderson’s former Grove City teammate, Alex Miklos, walked, moved to second on a balk and scored on a single by Matt Peters to put Butler up 1-0 in the first.
The BlueSox opened up the game in the bottom of the third inning with five runs. Taylor Schmidt beat out an infield single, stole second and third, scoring on a throwing error by Lorain catcher Rey Carrion to get the big inning started.
Miklos, Jurich and Pat McCarthy all had RBIs in the frame against Lorain pitcher Caleb Schillace.
The Ironmen right-hander lasted only 4 2-3 innings. He was charged with two more runs in the fifth inning and gave up all eight runs on 10 hits.
Butler had 13 hits and six stolen bases in the game. Schmidt had four steals to give him a Prospect League-leading 13 this year.
“If we can get on base, we make things happen,” Rebyanski said. “I keep reiterating that. We forced them to throw the ball around and panic a little bit. That’s our element and we’re going to keep doing it.”
Butler High graduate Colin McKee, who began this summer pitching for Saxonburg in the Eagle County League, worked a scoreless eighth inning for the BlueSox.
The right-hander, who is a freshman at Mercyhurst College, walked two and gave up a single that right fielder Matt Berezo lost in the lights, but got out of the frame unscathed with back-to-back strikeouts.
Grove City High graduate and Kent State University freshman, Jason Revesz, worked a perfect ninth.
Butler has now won two straight at home following a 1-3 road trip in West Virginia and Chillicothe.
“These guys are hungry. They want to win,” Rebyanski said. “Now our key is to keep going, to stay above .500. These guys I know don’t want to hover around .500.”
Notes: There was a scary moment in the second inning when Butler High grad Cody Herald fouled a pitch off his cheek. Herald was on his knees on the turf just in front of home plate cupping his face in his hands for several minutes before being helped off the field. He had a huge gash under his right eye. “I know he’s going to go see the doctor (Saturday),” Rebyanski said. “We’ll go day-to-day with him, see what the scoop is and make the adjustments.” ... The attendance was 1,330, the biggest crowd of the season. ... Butler now has 38 stolen bases in 16 games this season, which leads the Prospect League. ... The BlueSox earned their fifth shutout of the season, which also leads the league. Butler pitchers also have allowed a league-low in opponent’s batting average (.217).
