Moraine, McConnells Mill state park schedule programs

The following public programs have been scheduled for Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks in April.

Timberdoodle Flutter — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13, Pavilion #7 McDanel’s Launch Area of Moraine State Park. Join in the pursuit of one of the most unusual birds found in Pennsylvania, the American Woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, night partridge, bigeye, bogsucker or mudsnipe. With a wingspan up to 20 inches, this chunky bird has big eyes, a very long bill and is very vocal. Attendees should take along binoculars, warm clothes and field footwear. Pre-registration is required. Registration is available on the DCNR Calendar of Events webpage.

Sights and Sounds of Spring — 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, Pleasant Valley Non-Motorized Launch Area on the South Shore of Moraine State Park. Join the Park Naturalist for a 1.9-mile hike on the short-loop Sunken Garden Trail. The woods are thawing and coming alive. Learn about the sights and sounds in the woods this time of year. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather.

Eagle Eyes — 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Davis Hollow Marina of Moraine State Park. Learn about bald eagle biology and their reintroduction journey with the park naturalists. There will be short hike to get the best view of one of the nesting pairs at the park. Take binoculars if you have them, and dress for the weather.

Volunteer Kickoff Meeting — 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, Pavilion # 7, McDanel’s Area North Shore, Moraine State Park. Learn how to get involved by volunteering at either Moraine or McConnells Mill state parks. Meet park staff and representatives of the nonprofit groups that support the parks. New and seasoned volunteers are all welcome. Registration is on the DCNR Calendar of Events webpage.
