Minnie Mae Sheakley
Minnie Mae Sheakley, 87, of Chicora, formerly of Braddock, passed away Saturday at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Her life began in Petrolia, where she was born on June 6, 1924, the daughter of Mary W. Sheakley.
Minnie Mae graduated from Karns City High School in 1942, and soon after she moved to Braddock to begin working at Edgar Thompson Steel Works, a position she held until 1945. She was very proud of the work she did in the steel mill during the war because of the support it lent to the men serving overseas.
After the war ended, Minnie Mae worked as a cashier at Kresge and then the A&P Market in West Mifflin, where she spent 29 years. Once she retired as a cashier, Minnie Mae kept busy by working for the Allegheny County United Way for 12 years.
After living her adult life in Braddock, she moved home to Chicora when she was in her 80s.
In Minnie Mae's younger years she loved traveling, and all her life she was an avid reader and enjoyed people watching. Her friends and family will always remember her hard work ethic, her passion for helping others and how well she cared for her mother.
Her memory will be carried on by her cousins, Richard Sheakley and his wife, Frances, of Bruin, Charles LeRoy Sheakley and his wife, Norma Jean, of Louisville, Ky., and Ruth Ilene Sheakley of Karns City; and other family and friends who loved her dearly.
Minnie Mae was preceded in death by her mother; maternal grandparents, Plummer and Minnie May (Lynch) Sheakley; four uncles and their wives; and three cousins.
