Pirates catcher Stallings wins Gold Glove award
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Jacob Stallings has been named a Rawlings Gold Glove winner for the first time in his career.
Stallings, 31, led all major league catchers with 21 defensive runs saved and pitch block rate (95.5%). He played 892 innings without allowing a passed ball in 2021. No other catcher in the big leagues with at least 500 innings caught did so.
Stallings started a career-high 103 games this season behind the plate, committing only five errors among his 923 total chances.
He is the first Pirate to win a Gold Glove since Mike LaValliere in 1987. He is the third Pirate catcher to ever win the award. Tony Pena won three consecutive Gold Gloves with the Pirates from 1983-85.
Since Rawlings began honoring players with Gold Gloves in 1957, Stallings represents the 50th time a Pirate player won the award.
He is the 19th different Pirate to do so.
