Jackson

MILWAUKEE — Seneca Valley graduate Zach Jackson was one of four players the Milwaukee Brewers traded to the Cleveland Indians for C.C. Sabathia, last year's American League Cy Young winner, on Monday.

The left-handed Jackson was 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA with the Brewers' Class AAA affiliate in Nashville and was 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two games with the Brewers, including a two-inning stint at Pittsburgh May 22.

According to MLB.com, the Indians were interested in Jackson, 25, because they needed some help on the pitching staff of their Class AAA team in Buffalo, N.Y.

FOX CHAPEL— Nathan Smith, a member at St. Jude Golf Club, tied for second place by firing a 70-70-140 on the first day of the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational Monday at the Pittsburgh Field Club.Smith, an amateur fresh off winning the West Penn Open Championship last week at Butler Country Club, is tied with JasonMartin of Fox Chapel Golf Club and three strokes behind leader Robert Friend of Pikewood National Golf Club.Another amateur and St. Jude member, Sean Knapp, is tied with John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred and two others for fifth place with a two-round score of 142.Professional Gene Walter of Saxonburg tied for ninth place with a 143, while Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club and Travis Dickson of Treesdale Golf and Country Club, along with three others, are tied for 12 place (144).Treesdale's Joe Boros is tied for 24th with a score of 148.All 40 golfers who took part Monday will play two more rounds today.

WEST MIDDLESEX — Marissa DeCola of Center Township placed second in the girls 14-15 division with a score of 76 at the King's Restaurant Junior Golf Tournament at Oak Tree Country Club.DeCola had tied Kendall Allen of Pittsburgh through 18 holes before Allen won on the first playoff hole.

ELYSBURG — The Evans City Fab Five finished in third place in the intermediate entry division (grades six to eight) at the Scholastic Clay Target Program's Pennsylvania Trap Championship Saturday at the Valley Gun and Country Club.Chad Miller, Danielle Green and Eric Peffer of Evans City, Travis Walsh of Mars and Damien St. George of Industry combined for a score of 792 out of 1,000 targets, five points behind the HAHSCougars (797) and 11 behind champion SCHSYoung Guns (803).

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday signed forward Janne Pesonen and defenseman Ben Lovejoy to one-year contracts.Pesonen, of Suomussalmi, Finland, had 34 goals and 44 assists with Oulu Karpat to lead the Finnish Elite League last season. The 26-year-old helped lead Karpat to its fifth league championship with seven goals and nine assists during the postseason.Lovejoy signed to a one-year entry-level contract with the Penguins.The Canaan, N.H., native played last season in 72 games for the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who acquired him as a free agent on June 14, 2007. He had two goals and 18 assists.
