MIDDLESEX TWP — The building inspection company contracted by the township was rehired Monday night by the township supervisors, but not before the supervisors aired concerns about its services.

The Middle Department Inspection Agency of Wexford was unanimously approved for another one-year contract with the township, where inspectors will continue to check new construction to ensure state and local building codes are being followed.

But supervisors Don Marshall and Mike Spreng said they have received complaints about the inspectors from builders.

Marshall said one builder was forced to install a water fountain in a storage building, and another had to spend an additional $50,000 to meet construction codes.

Spreng said unhappy builders also have complained about the MDIA inspector’s availability.

“I don’t think he gets around enough,” Spreng said.

Marshall noted the number of inspections will only increase as the township grows.

Township manager Scot Fodi said inspectors must strictly adhere to building codes because of liability issues, even if they seem excessive.

He reminded the supervisors that while a larger township like Cranberry has multiple inspectors, Middlesex has just one.

Fodi said he would talk with the MDIA inspector and share the supervisors’ concerns.

Also at the meeting, Spreng was reappointed as road master for $7.25 per hour.

Fodi recommended another supervisor be appointed as assistant road master for when Spreng is unavailable because the road crew workers need direction.

While an assistant road master was not named, Fodi said he would contact neighboring municipalities to learn other ways to structure the work day for the road crew.

Also the supervisors re-elected Spreng as chairman and Marshall as vice chairman.
